LJUBLJANA, April 5 (Hina) - Slovene Prime Minister Janez Jansa has said Croatia's future in Europe is the most important instrument for reducing possible Croatian-Slovene tensions and that he and his Croatian counterpart Ivo Sanader trust each other.

"We've inherited a number of open issues from the previous government, including some which can't be solved overnight. There have been many ups and downs, Slovenia wasn't to blame to a great extent, but more could have been done in certain areas," Jansa told Slovene Television on Monday evening, STA news agency said on Tuesday.

He did not rule out the possibility of occasional tensions reoccurring, but underlined the importance of renewing dialogue on open issues. He added that a key role in this would be played by Croatia's European prospects.

"The more Croatia adopts European standards, the more will our dialogue be held on the same frequencies, we will understand what has been written in the same way and stick to agreements," Jansa said, alluding to a 2001 draft border deal.

"It's difficult to negotiate if a government signs an agreement only to have the ruling party in parliament reject it," he said in connection with the border deal initialled by the then prime ministers, Janez Drnovsek of Slovenia and Ivica Racan of Croatia, which has not been signed or ratified in the Croatian parliament.

Asked if Sanader was a reliable partner, Jansa answered in the affirmative, saying that what had been agreed with Sanader to date had been realised, including Croatia's appointment of its members to a so-called history commission.

Jansa said the two governments were also close to drafting agreements on the avoidance of border incidents and on the avoidance of double taxation.

"If we draft these agreements in this year's first half, I will be satisfied," Jansa said.
