ZAGREB, April 5 (Hina) - This year's recipients of scholarships from the Japanese government -- archeology graduate Natasa Pokupcic and a second-year student of the Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Tomislav Obradovic -- were presented to reporters at the Japanese Embassy in Zagreb on Tuesday.

Pokupcic has been awarded a scholarship for post-graduate studies in Japan, while Obradovic will use his to complete his graduate studies in Japan. The scholarships also provide for studying the Japanese language.

For the past ten years or so Croatian nationals have been able to apply for postgraduate or doctoral scholarships in Japan lasting 18 or 24 months, and as of last year they also have the opportunity to apply for undergraduate scholarships, Japanese Ambassador Kaname Ikeda said.

It was announced that next year the Japanese government would present a new scholarship programme for Japanese studies after the Zagreb Faculty of Philosophy introduced a three-year course of Japanese studies as of the academic year 2004/2005.
