Lukic departed for The Hague immediately after his release from a Belgrade hospital, where he had undergone medical treatment.
The Serbian government said in a statement it would provide all necessary guarantees so that Lukic was granted release pending trial. Lukic left for the Netherlands after heart surgery.
Of the four army and police generals accused of crimes in Kosovo in 1999, Lukic was the first to take over his indictment at the Belgrade District Court, but his departure had been postponed due to the heart surgery and subsequent health problems.
Another general, Vladimir Lazarevic, previously surrendered voluntarily to the tribunal. The whereabouts of the other two generals, Nebojsa Pavkovic and Vlastimir Djordjevic, are not known.
