ZAGREB, April 1 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said on Friday his ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) held consultations about calling local elections and that April 7 was the likeliest date when they would be called.

After today's session of the HDZ Presidency and National Council, Sanader said the two party bodies confirmed that HDZ local branches would have complete autonomy in drawing up slates and forming pre- and post-election coalitions.

The party also discussed its platform for the polls and set up an election headquarters.

Asked if the zero blood alcohol level provision would be repealed, Sanader said a decision would be made after reviewing the latest statistics.

Asked to comment on tourist officials' claims that the provision would damage tourism, Sanader said the government was firm in its position that if the provision saved even one life it was worth to have passed it.

Asked by the press if the HDZ had chosen its candidate for Zagreb mayor, Sanader said the candidate would be chosen by the party's Zagreb committee and that a consultative session would be held on Monday.

He was also asked to comment on the fact that deputies of the Independent Democratic Serb Party today in parliament denied support for a government bill on municipalities, counties and towns over claims of electoral engineering. Sanader said the government would certainly react.
