Former eight military policemen are indicted for war crimes which they allegedly committed against civilians in the Lora military investigation centre in Split from March to September 1992.
Tonci Vrkic, Ante Gudic, Andjelko Botic and Davor Banic have been in custody since last September.
Warrants for the arrest have been issued for the principal indictee Tomislav Duic, and Josip Bikic, Miljenko Bajic and Emilijo Bungur, who are on the run.
The Croatian Supreme Court recently upheld the Split County Court's decision that the retrial of the Lora group should start with the four indictees being tried in absentia.
In August 2004 the Supreme Court quashed the decision of a panel of judges of the Split County Court to acquit all the eight indictees.
This week, a deputy state prosecutor from Split arrived in Belgrade to interview 15 witnesses, who are now living in Serbia. According to a press release issued by the Belgrade-based office of the special war crimes prosecutor, the witnesses are expected to be summoned to appear in Split and give their testimonies during the retrial.
