ZAGREB, March 22 (Hina) - The association of disabled Homeland War veterans HVIDRA has opposed a proposal by the Istrian Democratic Party (IDS) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to equate the rights of WWII anti-fascist fighters with those of Homeland War veterans.

HVIDRA respects the anti-fascist foundations of the Croatian Constitution, but it also claims that it is a known fact that war crimes were committed under the pretext of anti-fascism and that they were never punished, HVIDRA president Josip Djakic said at a news conference in Zagreb on Tuesday.

He added that the proposal of the two parties would be met with great resistance among war veterans.

Anti-fascist fighters have exercised their legal rights for 60 years while the rights of disabled Croatian war veterans and other soldiers have been reviewed several times since the end of the war, Djakic said.

A member of the HVIDRA Executive Committee, Josip Perisa, requested that the rights of anti-fascist fighters be revised.

Speaking about the recently founded association of disabled Homeland War veterans called VIDDR, Djakic said that its founding session was attended only by some 15 people who disregarded the law on associations, failing to play the national anthem or pay tribute to Croatian Homeland War soldiers who were killed or died.

He reiterated that there was no rift in HVIDRA and that the new association was given too much media coverage.
