Effects of GMOs are still not known, and relevant laws should not be adopted for the sake of the present time but for the sake of the future, the associations' representatives and external members said at a committee session in Zagreb on Monday.
The European Union acknowledges that GMO is a potential health risk. In addition, GMO seeds are more expensive, yields are not higher, and many factors render the sale of those products difficult, genetics expert Marijan Jost said.
The associations warn that the EU members treat differently this issue, with Austria, Italy and Slovenia being strongly against GMO products.
The parliament should take a position on the matter during the ongoing 13th session.
