ZAGREB, March 19 (Hina) - The Croatian Society of Political Prisoners (HDPZ) on Saturday elected its new president, Alfred Obranic, and stated in a final declaration of its seventh convention that political prisoners did not approve the way in which Croatia should enter the European Union.

"We condemn the continuation of such a Croatian foreign policy that starts from sacrificing national pride and dignity," read the declaration adopted at the convention of this association which represents over 5,900 former prisoners who served their terms after they were processed at politically-motivated trials during the Communist rule in the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

They also believe that Croatia's entry into the EU is not a condition for the survival and prosperity of the Croatian nation as the admission in that association, they say, will not solve any serious Croatian economic problem.

During a discussion, Ivan Gabelica said that the HDPZ was not a trade union but a political association that should continue nurturing the struggle of the Croatian state for its independence.
