VUKOVAR, March 18 (Hina) - Croatia will pursue the pro-European policy and the policy of reconciliation 10 years after the war and seven after the peaceful reintegration of its eastern Danube River Region, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said at a government session in the eastern town of Vukovar on Friday.

"We wish peace and prosperity to all in Europe and the entire region, the normalisation of relations based on mutual acknowledgement," said Sanader.

He underlined that Vukovar, Croatia's most damaged town in the 1990s war, was a heroic town which could symbolise a new beginning and prosperity for Croatia.

"Vukovar means something special for the government. We are proud of the days when it defended not itself, but Croatia, and we will never forget this," he said. Also today, government members laid wreaths for the war victims at Ovcara mass grave and Vukovar's memorial cemetery.

Sanader reiterated that the revival of the Greater Serbia concept or the Republic of Serb Krajina, an unrecognised statelet set up by Croatian Serb rebels in the early 1990s, were marginal occurrences which were bad for Serbia and Montenegro as well.

He said that Vukovar was still looking for more than 500 people gone missing during the war and that the war damage in the county amounted to 20 billion kuna.

Prefect Nikola Safer said the county was facing numerous problems, primarily young people leaving. He urged creating conditions for the return of refugees by reviving the economy and opening jobs.

The PM said the government had expanded the existing free zone in Vukovar and approved the opening of another. He added the government would give three million kuna to the Vukovar river port, and recalled that the Belgian government had donated 450,000 euros to the port.

The economy is expected to receive a boost also from the revitalisation of the cultural heritage through the 227 million kuna Ilok-Vukovar-Vucedol project, for which the Council of Europe Development Bank gave 169 million kuna.

The government appointed a council for the project, electing Culture Minister Bozo Biskupic as chair.

Before his cabinet's session, Sanader and his ministers held a meeting with local businessmen.
