"I think we can find a formula that would be to everyone's satisfaction, which would make it possible for Croatia to take some more steps and for Europe to accept us into its midst, and for the talks to start," Mesic said after meeting Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, whose country currently holds the rotating EU presidency.
Some of the EU members led by Great Britain want the entry talks scheduled for March 17 postponed because Croatia has failed to meet its commitment to locate fugitive army general Ante Gotovina and transfer him to The Hague.
Mesic said that he and Juncker had discussed steps that would resolve this problem. "How this will go, we will know in the next few days," he said.
Mesic completed a series of bilateral talks on the margins of an international conference on terrorism in Madrid with a meeting with former Slovene President Milan Kucan. Their talks focused on the situation in Southeast Europe and bilateral issues.
Mesic had also met Swiss President Samuel Schmied, President of Serbia and Montenegro Svetozar Marovic, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Zapatero, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier.
