Explaining the proposal at a session in Pula, prefect Ivan Jakovcic said Prodi promoted interregional, interethnic and interreligious relations of tolerance.
"Prodi is the first man of the Italian left wing looking into the future with respect," said deputy prefect Giuseppe Rota.
Emil Soldatic, a member of the county government, said that Prodi, as a member of the Christian centre-left, would give a strong signal to the Italian right wing not to use "all the evils of history... for political purposes," but focus on neighbourly cooperation between states and counties.
If the Istria County Assembly accepts the proposal, Prodi will be declared county honorary citizen on March 30, Istrian Statute Day.
