Seks: Delay of EU entry talks would discourage pro-European forces in Croatia

ZAGREB, March 1 (Hina) - Croatian Parliament President Vladimir Seks said on Tuesday that a postponement of EU membership talks with Croatia would frustrate and discourage pro-European forces in the country.

Seks was responding to a question at a press conference in Zagreb whether he was afraid of radicalisation of the political situation in Croatia in case the membership talks did not open on March 17 as planned.

The speaker of the Sabor said that great efforts were being made in order to convince the European Union and Hague Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Carla del Ponte that such a step would not be fair to Croatia and that all consequences should be taken into account.

Seks said that no protests by war veterans' organisations would threaten the stability of the government and its policy.

He announced that a joint letter by the President of the Republic, the President of the Parliament and the Prime Minister would be sent to heads of state, government and parliament of EU member states about the efforts it was making in order to be recognised as a country that was meeting all the requirements, especially one relating to cooperation with the Hague tribunal.

Seks recalled that all state institutions were under clear instructions to find, arrest and transfer to The Hague fugitive general Ante Gotovina or establish that he was not hiding in Croatia.

Seks said he believed that despite this last remaining obstacle the negotiations with the EU would start on March 17.

He rejected criticism that he was the main culprit why a National Committee for the supervision of EU talks has not yet been appointed.

"Why is (Peasant Party leader) Zlatko Tomcic criticising me when none of the parties has nominated its member on the Committee?," Seks asked, admitting that it was not easy to find members of Parliament who would take up such a responsibility.
