SUBOTICA, Feb 25 (Hina) - About 50 eminent Bunjevci Croats, namely Croats whose families originated from the bordering areas of Croatia, Serbia and Hungary (the so-called Backa region), have sent an open letter urging the discontinuation of the division of the Croat ethnic community in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina into Croats and Bunjevci.

The signatories are outraged to see that the "practice of dividing the Croat people in Backa since 2004 has been carried out with the unequivocal support of state bodies, as evidenced by the latest example, i.e. the announced introduction of the Bunjevci language in Vojvodina schools".

Condemning the attempt to introduce the Ikavian Bunjevci dialect without any scientific grounds as a subject matter instead of standard Croatian, the signatories asked the representatives at all levels of authority in Serbia-Montenegro to stop fomenting the division inside the Croat ethnic community in Vojvodina.

They ask Croatia, as their mother country, to take all necessary steps so as to "protect the integrity of the Croatian people and language in Vojvodina", particularly in light of the announced ratification of the bilateral agreement with Serbia-Montenegro on the protection of reciprocal minorities.

The appeal was launched following recent statements by representatives of the national council of the Bunjevci ethnic minority who negated the Croat origins of this community and their announcement that the Bunjevci language would be taught in primary schools as of the next school year.
