A delegation of the committee visited the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina to meet representatives of local Hungarian, Croat and Bunjevci communities and establish the state of affairs regarding inter-ethnic relations in Vojvodina.
Dzudzevic said that apart from a certain level of hostility towards national minorities, there was lack of appropriate reaction on the part of the Serbian government to inter-ethnic incidents, which he added was a problem that was being gradually overcome.
Speaking about problems regarding the use of their mother tongue, access to information and education, representatives of the Croat minority said they expected the authorities to create conditions which would enable them to exercise their rights and take part in the social life of Vojvodina and Serbia.
Hungarian minority representatives said that there had been almost no inter-ethnic incidents lately but that the attitude towards national minorities in Serbia was still negative.
Last year saw several dozen incidents in Vojvodina, the targets being religious and ethnic symbols of national minorities, including those of local Croats.
