ZAGREB, Feb 22 (Hina) - Croatian Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks on Tuesday met the Organisation for European Security and Cooperation (OSCE) High Representative for National Minorities, Rolf Ekeus, who was on a working visit, the Office of the Parliament Speaker said in a statement.

As a regional organisation which has been active in Croatia for many years, the OSCE has contributed to overall democratic changes in the Croatian society, Seks said, adding that the OSCE's main task today was considerably different, primarily in light of the great progress Croatia had made in all areas.

Ekeus expressed great satisfaction with Croatia's results in the post-conflict rehabilitation of the society, notably in relation to the rights of national minorities, refugee return and the repossession of property by returnees.

Ekeus also showed an interest in ensuring a more active role of the Council for National Minorities in the promotion of minority rights. He added that the existing relevant legislation, which he said was of good quality, did not result in greater involvement and importance of the Council in the life of local communities and that efforts should be made to educate citizens about its role.

Seks informed his guest about the announced changes to laws on voters' registers and residence as well as about the results that have been achieved since last year's parliamentary elections in the integration of minority representatives into bodies of central administrative and executive authority, the statement said.
