Parliaments of Croatia, Serbia-Montenegro to ratify agreement on minorities by end of February

BELGRADE, Jan 24 (Hina) - The agreement on the mutual protection of minorities that was initialled by Croatia and Serbia and Montenegro during Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader's visit to Belgrade at the end of last year, should be ratified by the two countries' parliaments by the end of February.

This was agreed at a meeting between Serbia and Montenegro's Human and Minority Rights Minister Rasim Ljajic and Croatia's Assistant Foreign Minister for Minorities, Emigrants and Immigrants Slavko Leban in Belgrade on Monday.

The Serbia and Montenegro Council of Ministers' information department said that a joint commission for assistance to minorities is expected to be set up soon with the aim of promoting cooperation in the mutual protection of minorities.

The commission would be comprised of representatives of ministries and minorities from both countries.

Leban today also met the head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro, Maurizio Massari. On Tuesday he will visit Subotica to meet with representatives of the Croat community.
