ViennaVIENNA, Feb 14 (Hina) - A three-day review conference on theimplementation of the Treaty on Open Skies started in Vienna on Mondayunder the auspices of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation inEurope (OSCE). The purpose
of the treaty is to improve the ability ofmember-countries to prevent conflicts, facilitate the resolution ofcrises, and ensure confidence and security-building.
VIENNA, Feb 14 (Hina) - A three-day review conference on the
implementation of the Treaty on Open Skies started in Vienna on Monday under
the auspices of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
The purpose of the treaty is to improve the ability of member-countries to
prevent conflicts, facilitate the resolution of crises, and ensure confidence
and security-building.Opening the conference, the German Ambassador to the OSCE, Dieter Boden,
called on the OSCE countries which have not joined the treaty to do so.
The participants welcomed six new members - Sweden, Finland, Lithuania,
Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia and Croatia, which is the youngest signatory to
the treaty, having signed it on 1 January 2005.
The Treaty on Open Skies was concluded in Helsinki in 1992 with the
purpose of enabling mutual aerial observation by its signatories.
The Vienna conference is attended by some 150 participants from 32
countries, including Croatia, as well as by observers from Europe, Asia and
Mediterranean countries.
