PODGORICA, Jan 29 (Hina) - Some 100 Montenegrin politicians and prominent public figures in Podgorica on Friday established a council for independent Montenegro which will be in charge of organising a referendum on the state status of Montenegro.

The objectives of the council are to constitute an independent state, gain membership of the European Union, establish open and friendly relations with Serbia, support regional peace, stability and prosperity and join international organisations and integration processes.

The coordinator of the council is Branko Lukovac who is currently Serbia and Montenegro's Ambassador to Rome.

Present at the founding session were some 130 people, including leaders of Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic's Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) and Ranko Krivokapic's Social Democratic Party, as well as representatives of Albanian parties and the Croat Civil Initiative.

Only a day earlier in Budva, Opposition parties formed a movement for the preservation of the state community of Serbia and Montenegro.
