ZAGREB, Feb 10 (Hina) - The Croatian Public Relations Association has strongly condemned the fact that its members Danijela Barisic, head of the Information Department and spokeswoman for the President of the Republic, and Zrinka Bardic, a former spokeswoman for the Ministry of the Interior, "were the subject of an inquiry by the Counterintelligence Agency (POA) just because they were doing their job".

"We have been hoping that Croatia has become a mature and ordinary democratic country where all institutions and services, including secret services, carry out their work transparently and in accordance with the law," the association said in a statement on Thursday.

Noting that it did not know how Barisic and Bardic could do harm to Croatian national security in the course of their duties, the association demanded that the relevant state institutions, primarily the Parliament, take all the necessary steps to identify those responsible in order to avoid similar situations in the future.

In the last two issues the Globus weekly published documents showing that the POA had been monitoring Barisic and Bardic because of their connections with journalists whom the agency suspected of being involved in a media and intelligence campaign against Croatia.
