ZAGREB/MADRID, Jan 28 (Hina) - There is considerable interest among Spanish tourists, travel agencies and investors in Croatia as a tourist destination, and the number of arrivals from Spain is expected to increase by 20 percent this year, the state secretary for tourism, Zdenko Micic, told Hina from Madrid on Friday.

Micic is attending Spain's largest international tourism fair, FITUR 2005, which is being held from 26 to 30 January.

This year's event has pooled more than 10,000 exhibitors from 170 countries.

On the first day of the fair, the Croatian official held a press conference at which he spoke about tourism in Croatia and investment possibilities.

Micic yesterday met the Spanish state secretary for tourism and trade, Pedro Meia Gomez, to discuss investments, particularly in golf resorts which is what Spain is known for.

Micic also met the director of the World Tourist Organisation personnel department, Eduardo Fayos Sola, with whom he reached agreement in principle to organise an international conference on tourism education in Dubrovnik in spring next year.

A news conference on international investments in Croatian tourism was held today by the Croatian Embassy in Madrid and the Spanish Chamber of Commerce. Croatian Privatisation Fund vice-president Ivan Gotovac spoke at the conference about the remaining state-owned tourist companies for whose privatisation bids will be invited soon.

Last year, the number of Spanish tourists vacationing in Croatia increased by 60 percent.
