Mesic and Sanader also arranged a meeting to be attended by Defence Minister Berislav Roncevic and the military chief-of-staff, General Josip Lucic.
Mesic recently said he expected Roncevic to tender his resignation. The president objected to the minister's statements during the recent presidential election campaign in connection with Mesic's suspicion about the legality of an army trucks purchase.
Mesic said he could not relieve the minister of his duties but could suggest so to the prime minister, who decides on the matter.
Tonight's meeting was the first between Sanader and Mesic since the president's January 16 re-election.
