SARAJEVO/MOSTAR, Jan 18 (Hina) - The press in Bosnia-Herzegovina on Tuesday said that the re-election of Croatian President Stjepan Mesic would have a positive impact on relations between Croatia and Bosnia.

Sarajevo-based Oslobodjenje daily said that "Mesic's re-election is extremely important for Bosnia-Herzegovina".

"Mesic fell out with Tudjman over Bosnia. While Tudjman counted on a part of the Bosnian territory, Mesic insisted that Bosnia was an independent and indivisible state. He was also persistent in this during his last presidential campaign, even though he was aware that in Bosnia he would win less votes that Jadranka Kosor who ran to Mostar in a bid to win more votes," Oslobodjenje said.

The daily stressed that after the announcement of election results, Mesic said that Bosnian Croats were a constituent people of Bosnia-Herzegovina and not Croatia's diaspora. "By saying that, he reiterated his standpoint on the indivisibility of Bosnia-Herzegovina and the country's sovereignty," the daily said.

In an article headlined "Mesic the Best Solution for Bosnia" Dnevni Avaz daily cited numerous Bosnian politicians who hailed Mesic's re-election. the Muslim member of the Bosnian Presidency Sulejman Tihic said that Mesic's victory meant the continuation of the policy of the development and promotion of good-neighbourly relations and Croatia's path to the EU. "Mesic was Bosnia's friend in the most difficult times," Tihic said.

Another Muslim (Bosniak) official Safet Halilovic told the daily that Mesic was Croatia's democratic face.

"He had the strength to tell the truth in the crucial moments of the war in Bosnia, namely that aggression on Bosnia was launched also from Croatia," Halilovic.
