Miksic says election were rigged

ZAGREB, Jan 3 (Hina) - Independent presidential candidate Boris Miksic said on Monday that Sunday's presidential elections were rigged and demanded of the State Election Commission (DIP) that he be an observer during the recount of votes.

Miksic called on the citizens to peacefully gather in main squares of Croatian towns tonight and sign a petition.

He read a petition to reporters which, he said, would be send to all decent people in Croatia and Croats abroad. The petition said that the results of the election were not the reflection of the true will of people and feared that the Croatian people had been deceived. Miksic asked of the citizens to sign the petition and demand the recount of votes.

"The Ukraine scenario is happening in Croatia - this is the reality, this is what we see as the results of the elections today," Miksic said.

He added that should irregularities be discovered after the recount he would demand that new elections be called.

Miksic claims that the election results were part of the deal between Mesic and Sanader and that Jadranka Kosor was a scapegoat.

Miksic's advisor on legal issues Mico Ljubenko said that Miksic's election team filed an objection with the State Election Commission this morning also because their request that Miksic's representative be present at the counting was overruled.

He also said that Miksic's election team would appeal to the Constitutional Court.

The State Election Commission (DIP) said on Monday that claims by presidential candidate Boris Miksic that he was in a less favourable position than the other 12 candidates were inappropriate and unfounded,

DIP chairman Ivica Crnic said that under the law, the work of election commissions could be monitored by representatives of political parties which nominated their candidates, nongovernmental organisations and foreign observers.

Independent presidential candidates, and Miksic was one of them, were able to exercise the possibility of observing elections through nongovernmental organisations, Crnic said and added that despite the fact that DIP had informed Miksic's election team of this possibility, Miksic's team did not exercise that right.
