ZAGREB, Jan 3 (Hina) - The incumbent president Stjepan Mesic and thecandidate of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party,Jadranka Kosor, go into a second run of presidential election onJanuary 16 after none of the 13
candidates managed to win over 50 percent of the vote for an outright victory in Sunday's election.
ZAGREB, Jan 3 (Hina) - The incumbent president Stjepan Mesic and the
candidate of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party, Jadranka Kosor,
go into a second run of presidential election on January 16 after none of the
13 candidates managed to win over 50 per cent of the vote for an outright
victory in Sunday's election.According to preliminary results released by the State Election
Commission at 2330 hours on Sunday, Mesic, backed by eight parliamentary
opposition parties, won 49.03 per cent of the vote, while Kosor gained 20.18
per cent.
The surprise of the election was independent candidate Boris Miksic who
came in third with 17.80 per cent.
All other candidates won under three per cent of the vote.
Voter turnout was 50.95 per cent.
