Zagreb doctors examine Glavas in Osijek hospital

OSIJEK, Dec 27 (Hina) - Two doctors from Zagreb, an internist and a psychiatrist, on Wednesday examined independent member of parliament Branimir Glavas, who has been in the intensive care unit of the Osijek Clinical Hospital for some time after a 37-day hunger strike which he started while being in custody on war crimes suspicion.

Internist Vladimir Gasparovic and psychiatrist Vera Smalc Folnegovic examined Glavas following a request by Zagreb County Court investigating judge Zdenko Posavec to establish whether Glavas is fit to attend the investigation into his alleged involvement in the killing of Serb civilians in 1991 in the case known as the Garage case.

The doctors will brief the judge before the Zagreb County Court on Thursday, said the head of the Osijek hospital medical team in charge of monitoring Glavas's condition.

The team's head, Dr Aleksandar Vcev, said he was not present while his Zagreb colleagues were examining the patient, and that the check-up took one hour. They were also acquainted with the Osijek hospital documentation regarding Glavas.

Dr. Vcev said that Glavas was still in a very complex mental and physical condition and that he was persistent in refusing all other examinations for diagnostic purposes and therapy measures. Glavas is only taking water, according to the doctor.

Immediately upon his arrival in the Remetinec detention centre in Zagreb on 26 October, Glavas went on a hunger strike. He was on strike until 2 October when investigating judge Posavec decided to temporarily suspend the investigation against him and release him from detention pending further procedure.

He was then transferred from the Zagreb prison hospital to the hospital in the eastern city of Osijek where the team led by Dr Vcev started his treatment.

Last week, lawyers for Glavas asked that internist Gasparovic be exempted from the Zagreb medical team whose task was to check his condition today.

Lawyer Drazen Matijevic said today that Dr Gasparovic was in conflict of interest given that he was a son-in-law of a former Osijek police chief with whom Glavas had a confrontation in 1990 when he organised protest rallies against the then police.
