ZAGREB, Dec 4 (Hina) - The ceremony marking the completion of a two-year CARDS project aimed at the strengthening of the capacity of the Croatian Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK) was held in Zagreb on Monday.

During the project, the Spanish Anti-Corruption Office trained Croatian colleagues so as to be more efficient in combating corruption and organised crime.

The project helped USKOK to increase its personnel by 80 percent, conclude agreements with other state bodies on information exchange, introduce a high-quality management system and a special computer network.

USKOK possesses now all tools necessary for it to become pro-active in the struggle against corruption and organised crime, said the head of the European Commission's Delegation in Croatia, Vincent Degert.

He added that USKOK was one of several factors necessary for the successful clampdown on organised crime and whit-collar crime.

The final success will be evident only with the consistent conduct of investigations and with the responsible persons bringing to justice, Degert said.

USKOK head Dinko Cvitan said that 300,000 euros had been invested in the computer network.

The Spanish chief state prosecutor, Candido Conde-Pumpidod, said the struggle against corruption and organised crime was a global struggle which required successful close cooperation.

His Croatian counterpart, Mladen Bajic, announced enquires so as to get the real state of affairs regarding the level of corruption in Croatia.
