Request lodged to stop Glavas probe in Sellotape war crimes case, lawsuits filed

OSIJEK, Dec 4 (Hina) - Attorneys representing independent member of parliament Branimir Glavas told the press on Monday they had submitted a request to Osijek County Court investigating judge Mario Kovac to discontinue the investigation into the so-called Sellotape war crimes case.

Marko Dumancic said he expected a decision in several days, perhaps even sooner.

He and the other two attorneys, Ante Madunic and Drazen Matijevic, also said they had pressed charges with the Osijek Municipal Prosecutor's Office against Jutarnji List journalist Davor Butkovic and an unidentified person, a government member, over articles in today's Jutarnji List and Vecernji List which they said wanted to influence the judiciary in the Glavas case.

According to Matijevic, Butkovic's article "Yet Another Ridiculing of Elementary Legal and Ethical Principles" contained a series of assessments of the ongoing trial against Glavas at the Zagreb County Court.

He said the article represented "the crudest form of coercion on a judicial official through a public medium" because it was published as the Zagreb County Court was deciding about the appeal the Zagreb County Prosecutor's Office lodged against investigating judge Zdenko Posavec's decision to suspend the investigation and detention of Glavas.

The Vecernji List article "Government Concerned", subheaded "Sanader's Cabinet - Breakdown of the Rule of Law", read that "unofficial but reliable sources said that the (government) is very concerned about (Posavec's decision)," and that "after consultations with legal experts, government circles said that this was some sort of rule of law breakdown".
