Kosovo's final status will help stabilise the entire region, Solana said in an interview.
Commenting on Republika Srpska Prime Minister Milorad Dodik's announcement that a referendum would be called for the separation of the Bosnian Serb entity if Kosovo's independence was recognised, Solana said such statements represented a return to the past and that a referendum would make no sense.
The international community will encourage a stronger unification of Bosnia and Herzegovina, not the separation of one of its parts, he said, adding, We have no reserve plan for Bosnia and Herzegovina, the only plan is that it become part of the European Union.
Asked if there was a possibility of Bosnia joining the EU together with Croatia, he said Croatia had considerably moved ahead of Bosnia in terms of accession activities.
