Bosnia to request prolongation of ICTY work

SARAJEVO, Dec 1 (Hina) - The Justice Ministry of Bosnia-Herzegovina has proposed to the country's government, the Council of Ministers, to consider the possibility of launching an initiative to extend the work of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).

The UN war crimes tribunal with headquarters in The Hague has to finish all trials by 2010.

The Sarajevo initiative is a result of talks which the association called "Women - War Victims" held with Justice Minister Slobodan Kovac on Friday.

The association's members insisted that Bosnia intensify its support to the Hague tribunal.

The ICTY Chief Prosecutor Carla del Ponte, who visited Sarajevo on Thursday, said the tribunal was in a hurry due to timetables and deadlines determined by the UN Security Council.

According to her, the tribunal stands no chance of being financed by the World Organisation after 2010.

She told the local press that none of the countries in the area of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia had so far launched an initiative for the prolongation of the tribunal, which might serve as a basis for discussions on the extension of deadlines in the Security Council.
