ZAGREB, Oct 24 (Hina) - The Management Board of the Vjesnik daily
on Tuesday withdrew last week's proposal to lay off 24 employees and the
daily's Supervisory Board refused the resignation tendered by the daily's
director Franjo Maletic, whose decision was motivated by a disagreement with
editor-in-chief Darko Djuretek. The decision to withdraw the
proposal to lay off 24 employees was made in order to prevent potential damage
to the daily's development and reputation and because of the need to overcome
internal disputes and reach agreement on future forms of economising.
A trade union representing journalists working for the daily last week
criticised the proposal to provide for surplus labour, saying that the criteria
under which redundant employees were selected were not transparent.
Both Maletic and Djuretek denied having defined the criteria. They were
unavailable for comment today.
