Croatian journalists warn about recent breaches of their labour rights

ZAGREB, Oct 23 (Hina) - The Croatian Journalists Association (HND) and the Trade Union of Journalists (SNH) on Monday issued a joint press release to warn about a recent increase in cases of violation of their labour rights and of journalists being denied media freedoms.
ZAGREB, Oct 23 (Hina) - The Croatian Journalists Association (HND) and the Trade Union of Journalists (SNH) on Monday issued a joint press release to warn about a recent increase in cases of violation of their labour rights and of journalists being denied media freedoms.

According to the press release, three reporters who used to be employed with the regional Glas Istre daily were sacked as they wrote and openly spoke about topics which did not suit the daily's owner.

In the daily Vjesnik, two lists containing the names of employees likely to be laid off have been announced. The first list contains the names of 24 employees who have been told that they are likely to be laid off and who have been advised not to go public about this.

A case in the town of Karlovac indicates another act of breaching media liberties. A local politician who holds the post of deputy mayor insisted that a reporter working for the Croatian Radio Karlovac, Vlado Drazic, be fined and reprimanded for his speech at a panel discussion.

The employer in the Vecernji List daily suspended the collective agreement by adopting a restrictive set of work rules. The employer also imposed a new code of ethics which the journalists in that paper did not see before it went into force. According to the press release, the new code brought about more insecurity in the journalistic profession.

All these examples have forced the association and the trade union to issue the press release and state that they cannot accept attempts to suspend acquired rights and media freedoms.
