Number of road fatalities in Croatia same as last year

ZAGREB, Oct 15 (Hina) - In the first nine months of this year 450 people were killed in road accidents in Croatia, one more than in the same period last year, according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior.

Most of the fatal accidents occurred in Varazdin, Dubrovnik and Slavonski Brod counties. The number of fatalities in Split, Bjelovar and Virovitica counties was smaller than last year.

Nearly 12,000 of over 43,000 registered road accidents happened as a result of speeding, 4,800 were caused by drivers denying the right of way of other road users, 3,800 occurred because drivers failed to keep the necessary distance between vehicles, while 3,100 were the result of illegally driving in reverse.

The police have announced measures to improve road safety in line with the National Road Safety Programme.
