Slovene foreign minister comments on latest border incident

LJUBLJANA, Sept 13 (Hina) - Slovene Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel on Wednesday commented on the arrest of a group of Slovene reporters by Croatian police on the Croatian-Slovene border near Sveti Martin na Muri.

Speaking to Slovene reporters during a break in a session of the Slovene parliament's foreign affairs committee, Rupel said that he discussed this unpleasant incident with his Croatian counterpart Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic today. Slovenia has lodged a protest note with Croatia and will also notify the European Union of the incident, he said.

Speaking about the arrest of Slovene reporters, Rupel said that they were not arrested by a joint Croatian-Slovene patrol, but that a Croatian police officer called for support, after which Croatian police took the reporters to Mursko Sredisce, where they were interrogated and their documents checked.

Rupel described this as a serious incident which required a discussion in the Slovene parliament.

"Civilised states do not do such things, especially not in areas where the border has not been determined yet," he said.

He added that the conduct of the Croatian police was contrary to the bilateral agreement on the avoidance of border incidents and the recent agreement on the reconstruction of a dyke on the River Mura.

Rupel was speaking before the foreign affairs committee, which convened for an extraordinary session to discuss relations with Croatia at the request of the Liberal Democrats, the strongest parliamentary Opposition party.
