RIJEKA, Sept 8 (Hina) - Eight persons who were arrested at several places in the coastal city of Rijeka on Thursday were brought before an investigating judge on Friday on suspicion that they have committed criminal offences, including extortion and obstruction of evidence.

A spokesman for the Rijeka County Court said today that most of the suspects stood mute while being interrogated, with a few of them presenting their evidence. After the questioning, the seven suspects were taken into custody and one was released pending further procedure.

During yesterday's spectacular operation in downtown Rijeka, the intervention police apprehended eight persons at several places in a few minutes. All of this happened in front of many flabbergasted passers-by.

Although the police have not made public their names, the media reported that some of the nabbed suspects are two prominent members of the local Albanian community - Janez Dervisis, the owner of a cafe in the centre of Rijeka, and his friend Vulnet Sedoli - a public notary, Suzana Vozila, a well-known lawyer in this biggest Croatian seaport, Velimir Dosen, as well as a policeman and a security guard.

The police confirmed at today's press conference that an employe of the crime police and a lawyer were among the arrested.

The police added that the employment of the intervention police during yesterday's operation was necessary given that some of suspects had already demonstrated brutality and some of them were armed during the apprehension.
