Djapic comments on accusations about conflict of interest, involvement of HOS in war crimes

ZAGREB, Aug 26 (Hina) - Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) leader Anto Djapic has dismissed media reports that he violated the Law on the Prevention of Conflict of Interest by failing to report in his declaration of assets an apartment he owns in Osijek.

Speaking to reporters during a break in a session of the party presidency on Saturday, Djapic also commented on a statement by Josip Leko, chairman of the parliamentary Commission for Conflict of Interest, who said that Djapic had been in conflict of interest when he travelled to a soccer match between Dinamo and Arsenal in London at the expense of the Croatian soccer club.

Djapic said that as president of the soccer club Osijek he had been invited by Dinamo to attend the London match and that he believed that he had not done anything immoral.

Commenting on media reports about the alleged involvement of Croatian Defence Forces (HOS) soldiers in a 1992 murder of a family in eastern Croatia, Djapic said that light must be shed on the crime.

HOS, established by the HSP, was among the first organised military forces that fought in Croatia's war of independence.

"There is no ideology that can justify the killing of civilians, particularly children, and whoever commits a crime for gain deserves nothing but contempt," Djapic said.

He said that the crime in question had been committed in 1992, after HOS had already been integrated into the Croatian army and the HSP no longer had control over HOS units.
