HSP leader sends open letter to President Mesic

ZAGREB, Aug 21 (Hina) - Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) leader Anto Djapic on Monday sent an open letter to President Stjepan Mesic urging him to take a clearer position on outstanding issues on the foreign policy front.

Djapic told a news conference that Mesic had failed to give concrete answers to questions from HSP members regarding Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica's statement that the Croatian military-police operation "Storm" was an "unpunished crime".

"Answering questions put at two HSP news conferences, Mesic gave only blanket statements about his work and the character of the HSP, which is not satisfactory for the Croatian public," Djapic said.

Commenting on the HSP's dissatisfaction with his role in the creation of the country's foreign policy, Mesic said that analyses showed that Croatia's foreign policy was good and that he was being criticised only by some radical right-wing circles, including the HSP.

Djapic today urged President Mesic to state clearly if he intended to condemn Kostunica's statement at his next meeting with Serbian state officials or ignore it, justifying it with Croatia's interests.

The HSP leader believes that Serbia has still not abandoned its nationalist policy and that statements by senior Serbian officials about Operation Storm proved that there was no difference between Serbia's current policy and its policy at the time of the Slobodan Milosevic regime.

Djapic again pointed to the unfavourable position of Croats in Vojvodina and Bosnia-Herzegovina and unresolved issues regarding the border with Slovenia.

He voiced dissatisfaction with what he said were stagnating political and economic relations with the United States, and pointed to the statement by the special coordinator of the Stability Pact for Southeastern Europe, Erhard Busek, that Croatia would not join the EU before 2014, which Djapic said was not an isolated opinion.

"This is alarming, because in recent years Croatia has made a number of small concessions and moves which obviously are not enough for fast-track EU entry, while the values from the early 1990s have been negated to a great extent."
