ZAGREB, July 14 (Hina) - The Executive Board of the International
Raoul Wallenberg Foundation has decided to present Croatian President Stjepan
Mesic with a special recognition for his commitment to promoting equality and
justice and to shedding light on the fate of Raoul Wallenberg and other
individuals who had been saving victims of the Holocaust, the President's
Office said in a statement on Friday. The award will be presented to
Mesic at a public ceremony.
The International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation is a nongovernmental
organisation whose mission is to develop educational programs and public
awareness campaigns based on the values of solidarity and civic courage,
ethical cornerstones of the Saviors of the Holocaust.
Raoul Wallenberg was a Swedish diplomat who, in the later stages of
World War II, worked tirelessly and at great personal risk to save many
thousands of Hungarian Jews from the Holocaust. He was later arrested by the
Soviets who suspected him of being a spy; his death in their custody is still a
matter of great controversy.
