PODGORICA, July 12 (Hina) - Montenegrin and Croatian Presidents Filip Vujanovic and Stjepan Mesic signed a joint declaration on bilateral relations and cooperation on Wednesday during Mesic's visit to Podgorica.
PODGORICA, July 12 (Hina) - Montenegrin and Croatian Presidents Filip Vujanovic and Stjepan Mesic signed a joint declaration on bilateral relations and cooperation on Wednesday during Mesic's visit to Podgorica.

According to the signed protocol, Croatia and Montenegro will direct their energy and activities towards the accomplishment of joint strategic objectives such as peace, stability and progress.

The document reads that an unavoidable prerequisite for embarking successfully on the path towards the future is to face the truth about the past, including the period of disintegration of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

The responsibility for war crimes committed on any side can be only individual, and with our cooperation with the Hague-based UN tribunal we can most efficiently counter a dangerous theory about the collective guilt of a people, the two heads of state said in the declaration.

Vujanovic and Mesic also expressed willingness to build bilateral relations on the principles of full equality and mutual benefits having in mind the fact that these bilateral relations are significant for a general political climate in the region.

The document underlines the importance of the care for the ethnic Croats in Montenegro and ethnic Montenegrins in Croatia.

The Croatian-Montenegrin cooperation will be in the service of promoting interests and needs of all citizens of the two countries and will not be directed against any third country or another group of states.

The two countries pledged to support each other in their efforts to join Euro-Atlantic institutions, according to the document.

After the ceremony of the signing of the declaration, Vujanovic and Mesic told the press that Montenegro and Croatia were willing to solve all outstanding issues.

Responding to reporters' questions, Mesic said that one of the outstanding issues was the safety and security of property owned by Croatian citizens and companies in Montenegro.

Vujanovic said that his country already financially compensated (war) losses to residents of the Croatian area of Konavle bordering with Montenegro in line with an agreement the two presidents signed last year.
