As regards the sea border, a provisional border regime is in force and there have been no incidents, but we want a lasting solution to that issue, Mesic said.
Answering a reporter's question, Mesic said that Croatia would not have made a mistake had it recognised Montenegro sooner, thus confirming its commitment to good neighbourly relations.
Asked whether Montenegro's recognition meant the end of disintegration of the former Yugoslavia, Mesic said that the status of Kosovo remained to be defined.
Speaking about the situation in Serbia, Mesic said that it was very difficult because the country had still not experienced a catharsis after the wars it had waged, or condemned the policy of Slobodan Milosevic, accepted its consequences and admitted defeat.
"Serbia will experience a catharsis when people responsible for the war and crimes committed in the region - Vojislav Seselj and former JNA generals Veljko Kadijevic and Blagoje Adzic - are sentenced by the Hague tribunal," Mesic said.
He went on to say that Serbia lacked a political force that would explain to the Serbian people that they had to seek happiness inside rather than outside the borders of their country. That is the reason for the increase in the popularity of the Serbian Radical Party, which advocates changing the borders, he added.
Speaking about the construction of a bridge linking the southern Peljesac peninsula with the mainland, Mesic said that a public tender should be announced for the project, worth more than 100 million euros. He added that extending the existing Zagreb-Split highway further south to Dubrovnik was a more important project for the public.
