SDP concludes should focus more on workers

ZAGREB, July 1 (Hina) - The Social Democratic Party (SDP) must focus more actively on labour and workers in the future, protecting and promoting them more, the strongest opposition party concluded at Saturday's convention on the position of workers in Croatia.
ZAGREB, July 1 (Hina) - The Social Democratic Party (SDP) must focus more actively on labour and workers in the future, protecting and promoting them more, the strongest opposition party concluded at Saturday's convention on the position of workers in Croatia.

About 400 delegates unanimously adopted a set of conclusions asking for an honest salary for honest work, social justice, protection of workers' rights, and harsh punishment of those who violate those rights.

Workers should be guaranteed job and salary security, exercising of their rights, and protection from the adverse effects of globalisation and neoliberal capitalism, according to the conclusions.

They also called for reforming the state administration so as to make it more effective in protecting workers.

During a debate, the delegates said the SDP must not be ashamed of and reject its socialist past, notably when it came the promotion of labour and workers.

Party leader Ivica Racan said the conclusions would determine the SDP's "political battle in the future" and that the party would evaluate the success of its performance on their implementation.

"The SDP has the strength and the will to offer Croatia a better and more honest programme than the one which the (ruling Croatian Democratic Union) HDZ does not even have and (better) than the policy (the HDZ) conducts," he said.

The SDP also adopted a report on last year's performance and voiced confidence in winning the next parliamentary elections.
