PM Sanader says government will protect Neretva river basin

ZAGREB, June 27 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said on Tuesday that the government would respond to announcements by the Bosnian Serb entity that it would build hydropower plants in the upper, Bosnian part of the Neretva River basin, which would cause environmental and economic damage to the lower, Croatian part of the basin.

"We will respond appropriately and protect the river delta," Sanader told Croatian Party of Rights deputy Tonci Tadic during question time.

In an answer to the same question from Jagoda Martincevic of the Croatian Democratic Union, Culture Minister Bozo Biskupic said his ministry was preparing a project to declare the lower part of the Neretva river basin a nature park.

PM Sanader dismissed claims by Ingrid Anticevic Marinovic of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) that his deputy Damir Polancec was secretly negotiating with attorneys for the Slovene company Viator Vektor on the payment of compensation to the Slovene company for the cancellation of a contract it had signed with the Sibenik-based TLM company.

Asked by the SDP deputy how much the government's bad deal would cost taxpayers, Sanader said that it was not the government but the TLM management that had cancelled the contract.
