SUBOTICA, June 15 (Hina) - Serbia's Interior Ministry on Thursday started issuing bilingual identity cards and the first, in Serbian-Hungarian, was issued in Subotica to Tomas Korhecz, the Vojvodina secretary for national minorities.

Serbian citizens will also be able to obtain at their request identity cards in Croatian-Serbian as well as in the languages of the other national minorities living in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina.

"This is small but significant step in the building of the rule of law," Korhecz told the press.

Serbia's law on the official use of language and alphabet gives national minorities the right to bilingual documents in places where their mother tongue is in official use.

National minorities account for one-third of Vojvodina's population.
