SEOUL, April 6 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic began an official visit to South Korea on Thursday with talks with President Roh Moo-hyun in the presidential residence.

The meeting mainly focused on ways of boosting economic cooperation, but also addressed some of the global political issues of common interest.

President Roh said he hoped the Croatian president's visit would lead to strengthening relations between the two countries.

"The Koreans are aware of your country's history and your cultural heritage. We know that Croatia has made economic progress thanks to your wise leadership," Roh said.

South Korea has shown a readiness to invest in the Croatian economy. Investment opportunities in Croatia were the subject of a Croatian-Korean economic forum which was held after the meeting, and Mesic will also discuss the matter with heads of leading Korean firms, such as Samsung Electronics, SK Telecom and Daewoo, during his scheduled visit to the cities of Suwon and Boondang.

Mesic told the forum that there was unused potential for the development of economic ties between the two countries, noting that Croatia could serve to Korean companies as a gateway to regional markets.

"Your experience in speedy industrialisation and export promotion is impressive and we find it very encouraging," the Croatian president said.

On Thursday, Mesic is scheduled to meet Parliament Speaker Kim Won-Kiem and attend a formal dinner, to be given in his honour by President Roh.
