ZAGREB, Jan 27 (Hina) - Speaking on the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said on Friday that the Holocaust was the gravest crime in the history of human civilisation and that it should never happen again.

Speaking to reporters after a commemoration at the Croatian-Israeli Society and the association "Bet Israel", Mesic said that by attending the event in his capacity as Croatia's president he wanted to send a message that the Holocaust must never happen again.

"If such a message is sent and if young people are informed about what really happened - that people were killed only because they were different, then we will be able to live in peace in this united Europe, which we support and where there will be tolerance and where war will be banned."

Mesic said he was not satisfied with the education of Croatian youth about the Holocaust, particularly in light of the appearance of intolerance and Nazi symbols among young people.

Mesic believes that textbook authors who write about the Holocaust should revise what they have written about the Holocaust or that this topic should be dealt with by some other authors.

Commenting on the reconstruction of the Zagreb Synagogue, Mesic said he supported the reconstruction of the building and called on everyone to join in the project.

Asked whether he knew details of the arrest of persons who attacked two Croatian diplomats in Belgrade on Wednesday evening, Mesic said he had no official information on the case. He confirmed that the Croatian and the Serbian police had announced cooperation in the case and added that he expected the Serbian police to be efficient.

Commenting on reasons for the attack, Mesic said he would not want to be as resolute as Prime Minister Ivo Sanader to claim that the attack was politically motivated, but would rather wait for the investigation to be completed.
