ZAGREB, Jan 20 (Hina) - The EU Committee of the Regions is willing to support Croatia on its road to the European Union and is considering a proposal to have four observers from the Committee join the work of the inter-parliamentary committee of the European Parliament and the Sabor, the chairman of the EU Committee of the Regions and parliament speaker of the German federal state Baden-Wuerttemberg, Peter Straub, said in Zagreb on Friday.

Straub, who is on an official visit to Croatia, told reporters after meeting Sabor Speaker Vladimir Seks that the inter-parliamentary committee should include four representatives of regional, i.e. local authorities.

The EU Committee of the Regions advocated the launching of membership talks between the EU and Croatia and was glad when on October 3 the Council of Ministers decided to open the door to the EU for Croatia, Straub said, wishing Croatia success in membership talks.

He added that the Committee of the Regions would set up a task force to monitor Croatia's progress on the road to the EU.

Sabor Speaker Seks said that the meeting focused on relations between Croatia and Baden-Wuerttemberg and ways how representatives of Croatian regions, municipalities and counties and their associations could join the Committee of the Regions so that Croatia could achieve decentralisation and start applying the principle of subsidiarity.

The two officials described cooperation between Croatia and Baden-Wuerttemberg as excellent.

They also announced the Croatian Days event, to take place in Stuttgart in May. Straub invited Seks to a football match between Croatia and Australia, to take place in Stuttgart on June 22, at the World Football Championship.

Straub today also met President Stjepan Mesic and Prime Minister Ivo Sanader.
