Slovene PM says decree on fishing area response to Croatia's move

LJUBLJANA, Jan 7 (Hina) - Slovene Prime Minister Janez Jansa has saidthat his government's decree proclaiming a fishing area at sea is atemporary solution and a response to a similar move made by Croatia,as well as that it does not prejudge the issue of the sea border.
LJUBLJANA, Jan 7 (Hina) - Slovene Prime Minister Janez Jansa has said that his government's decree proclaiming a fishing area at sea is a temporary solution and a response to a similar move made by Croatia, as well as that it does not prejudge the issue of the sea border.

Jansa was commenting on the latest tensions in relations with Croatia at a meeting of his Slovene Democratic Party on Saturday.

On the day when it gained independence Slovenia controlled the entire Bay of Piran and had access to international waters via its territorial waters, Jansa said, adding that Croatia should respect this and seek an ally in Slovenia on its path to the European Union.

"By passing the decree proclaiming a fishing area the Slovene government tried to rectify the situation which arose when on December 15 last year Croatia adopted fishing regulations encroaching on Slovenia's territorial waters," Jansa told reporters covering an informal meeting of Slovene diplomats in Slovenska Bistrica.

"The Slovene decree does not prejudge anything because it is a temporary solution," he said.

He explained that Slovenia was not satisfied with the pace of Croatia-EU talks on fishing rules in the Slovene-Croatian border area.

"If Croatia were more cooperative in talks with Brussels regarding implementation regulations on fisheries, moves like this one would be unnecessary. There is not much good will in Croatia to reach an agreement with the European Commission, and the Commission is now also representing Slovenia's interests".

Stating that Slovenia had been forced to pass the decree, Jansa said that it was not a unilateral move but a response to a unilateral move by Croatia.

Asked about his government's strategy regarding relations with Croatia, Jansa said this depended also on Croatia and that Slovenia wanted problems to be solved as soon as possible.

Repeating that the two countries had much more in common than they had differences, Jansa added that Croatia should count on Slovenia's support in its negotiations with the EU and see Slovenia as an ally.

"We have a strong economic partnership. We support Croatia on its difficult path towards the EU because it is our strategic interest to move the Schengen border as far from Slovene territory as possible. But Croatia will have to meet the well-known criteria on its road to the EU, including the political criteria. The evaluation of those criteria is now becoming stricter due to the EU enlargement weariness. Croatia should be aware of that. It is now in a situation when on its road to the EU it needs allies and not opponents," Jansa said.
