ZAGREB, Jan 24 (Hina) - A Chilean Senate delegation headed by its president, Sergio Romero Pizarro, was received on Tuesday by the heads of the Croatian parliamentary committees on foreign affairs and European integration, parliament said in a press release.

Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Gordan Jandrokovic said Croatia and Chile had excellent relations and that today's meeting would deepen them further, notably inter-parliamentary cooperation.

Jandrokovic said Croatia remembered that Chile was the first South American country which recognised Croatia's independence. He added the numerous and well-integrated Croat community in Chile was the best bridge in bilateral relations.

Jandrokovic said European and NATO memberships were Croatia's foreign policy priorities, which he added were expected to settle economic, development and security issues.

Pizarro underlined the importance of his visit, saying it was the first time that a Chilean Senate president was visiting Croatia. He added Chile wanted to intensify ties with Central Europe.

The senator also spoke of the possibility of mutual investing, saying Chile was interested in investing in Croatian ports.

Jandrokovic said Croatia was interested in intensifying economic cooperation and possible investing, and that Croatia could be Chile's gateway to Central Europe.

The chairman of the parliamentary European Integration Committee, Neven Mimica, spoke of the parliamentary dimension of Croatia's European Union accession process, saying negotiations might wrap up in 2008 and Croatia formally join the Union in 2009.

Pizarro was also received by Croatian-Chilean Friendship Group chairwoman Djurdja Adlesic, who said Croatia highly appreciated the unreserved support Chile and its people had provided Croatia in the most difficult moments of its recent past.
