THE HAGUE, Jan 19 (Hina) - Vojislav Seselj, who is conducting his own defence at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague, has asked the ICTY Registry to pay him USD2.4 million towards costs of the preparation of defence, the tribunal said on Thursday.

Seselj, the leader of Serbia's largest opposition party, the Radical Party, is charged with war crimes committed against non-Serbs in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina in the 1990s.

Seselj has filed a motion requesting the ICTY to disburse USD2,339,400 towards the costs his team of 25 experts, mainly members of his party, has incurred in preparing his defence since February 2003 when he voluntarily surrendered to the tribunal.

The defence motion specified that by the end of 2003 costs amounted to USD200,000, in 2004 they reached USD797,400 and in 2005 they rose to a further USD1,339,400.

The defence claims that Seselj is the tribunal's only indictee denied the right to have the costs of his defence covered by the tribunal even though he is not able to cover them himself.
