Speaking to the press after talks with Croatian Defence Minister Berislav Roncevic, Melescanu said his estimate was not based only on excellent political relations between Romania and Croatia, but also on the efforts Croatia had invested in meeting EU and NATO membership criteria.
Roncevic said Zagreb had reason to be optimistic about the summit and viewed the news that enlargement would be on the agenda as good news for Croatia.
The two ministers discussed bilateral military cooperation, cooperation in combating terrorism and in Southeast Europe security issues.
They also discussed the Kosovo issue, supporting a peaceful solution regarding the final status of the Serbian province that would avert new conflicts between the majority Albanian and minority Serbian population in the future.
