Speaking to the press after meeting UN civil administrator in Kosovo Joachim Ruecker, Ceku said this was only his idea and that its realisation required the consent of the Kosovo negotiating team and support from the US and some European Union countries.
Ceku said the foundation for the definition of Kosovo's status lay in UN mediator Martti Ahtisaari's plan for the province, adding that the plan also envisaged a 120-day transition period for the departure of the current UN Mission and establishment of an EU Mission.
Ceku said the UN Security Council's failure to adopt a resolution on Kosovo's status did not leave much room for agreement so that proclaiming independence was what was left.
The premier said Kosovo would consult with Washington and Brussels about all the steps it would take.
Speaking about a meeting of the Kosovo negotiating team with US State Secretary Condoleezza Rice announced for next week, Ceku said Kosovo would underline that it is ready for independence.
